Obituary for Lavern "Vern" A. Schieffer

Lavern "Vern" A. Schieffer
SCHIEFFER, Lavern “Vern” A.
Hastings
Lavern A. Schieffer, age 82 of Hastings, passed away May 10, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence, following a brave battle with cancer. Lavern was born January 4, 1936 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin; the son of Theodore J. and Matilda (Prock) Schieffer. Lavern had to quit school at the age of sixteen to help on the family farm when his father passed away. He moved to Battle Creek where he was a plumber and pipefitter for forty three years for Smith Hammond Piping Company, retiring in 1997. Lavern was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 333 and the Delton Moose Lodge 1649. Lavern was one of the founding members of Our Lady of Great Oak Catholic Church and he was a member for over forty years. Lavern loved snowmobiling and he operated a small snowmobile parts business from his home for thirty years. His real passions were his family, friends, and the farm; where he raised beef cattle and crops. Lavern loved to talk and he never met a stranger. He will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, a valued friend, and a respected farmer. Lavern married the former Judith K. Katz on October 10, 1997, who survives. He is also survived by stepsons: Hal Gray and Todd (Julie) Edgerton, brothers: Ted, Virgil, and Alan, sisters: Ruth and Marilyn, grandsons: Michael and Casey, a great granddaughter: Claire, and several nieces and nephews. Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Timothy Lee Schieffer, brothers: Leonard, Milo, Julian “Joe” and Marvin, and a sister: Kathleen. Lavern’s family will receive friends Monday, 6:00 - 8:00 PM with a wake service at 7:30 PM at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 15, 2018, 11:00 AM, at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, Delton. Private burial will take place in Dowling Cemetery at a later date. For a more lasting memorial, memorial contributions to Our Lady of Great Oak or Wounded Warrior Project will be appreciated.
